Lydiate takes Six Nations prize

Wales flanker Dan Lydiate has been named the RBS Player of the Championship for the 2012 RBS Six Nations.

Grand Slam champions Wales dominated the shortlist of 12 names with captain Sam Warburton, Alex Cuthbert and Mike Philips all nominated but it was Lydiate who took the accolade after securing over 25% of the vote. The shortlist was compiled of winners of the RBS Man of the Match award chosen by the host broadcasters from the first four weekends and Lydiate was voted in ahead of Ireland's Jonathan Sexton with Italian captain Sergio Parisse third.

"I am really surprised to be honest. I am genuinely chuffed to bits," Lydiate said."It tops off an amazing competition for me and for Wales. To be part of such a talented Wales team and win the Grand Slam in Cardiff on Saturday was incredible in itself but to then be voted Player of the Championship is absolutely unbelievable."It is a massive honour to win, especially given the quality of the other players up for the award. Thanks to everyone who voted for me, it means a lot."

Lydiate was named man of the match in the win over Scotland and for his performance against France as Wales secured their third Grand Slam in eight years.Scotland's David Denton and Ross Rennie, Donnacha Ryan of Ireland and French trio Julien Malzieu, Imanol Harinordoquy and Yoann Maestri were also shortlisted for the prize. - http://www.setanta.com
