Ex-Springbok Tyibilika shot dead

The incident occurred on Sunday when Tyibilika, who was the first ever black player to score a test try for the Springboks, was drinking in a bar in Guguleth.

It has been reported that two men entered the bar and opened fire on the 32-year-old who was hit several times and died at the scene. Two other victims in the bar were also injured and taken to hospital.

“Two unidentified males, both carrying firearms, entered the premises and randomly shot at the patrons," police spokesman Frederick van Wyk told AFP.

No motive is known for the shooting, with the rugby world in South Africa shocked and saddened by the news.

Oregan Hoskins, President of the South African Rugby Union said Tyibilika was a ‘very talented player and an immensely likable young man’.

He added: “Solly was a trailblazer among black African Springboks and if the reports are correct, to lose him so suddenly and in this brutal manner is very distressing.

“The casual disregard for life in our society is shocking.

“His emergence was a demonstration of what can be achieved when talent is combined with opportunity in what is always a very competitive position in Springbok rugby.

“I remember a very talented player and an immensely likable young man who rose far and fast to become a Springbok early in his career."

Tyibilika, who made his South African test debut in 2004, made eight appearances for the Boks, while he played his regional rugby with Griquas and the Lions in South Africa and the Sharks in Super Rugby. He had been playing for Hamiltons in Cape Town this season.

Hamiltons President Dave Kagan said of the sadly-departed Tyibilika: “He played an important role as a role model coaching our U19s, helping us bridge and bring up players into the senior level.
