IRFU deny player allegations

The Irish Rugby Football Union has defended the antics of the Irish players in the face of allegations of their off-field behaviour at the World Cup.

The extent of England's shambolic World Cup came to light on Wednesday when The Times published details of internal reports into the off-field problems which plagued Martin Johnson's side in New Zealand.

However, in a bid to deflect attention away from the Red Roses, an unnamed England player has accused Irish players of acting in an unacceptable way in Altitude Bar in Queenstown.

"Ireland had been in there and were much worse, but I think they might have taken the press with them," the player claimed.

However, Ireland management have categorically denied the accusations with the IRFU insisting that there were no complaints made against any Irish player.

"The Ireland players were coincidentally on a sanctioned evening off in Queenstown and had permission to be outside of the team hotel," IRFU spokesman Karl Richardson said.

"We received absolutely no complaints of any description about any of the players following the evening and all the players were back in the hotel before the agreed curfew time.

"It was the only sanctioned night off of our entire World Cup campaign and as far as we are concerned it was treated with respect by the players and there were no problems." - http://www.setanta.com
